As you may or may not know, Phil and I - along with a few girlfriends (yes, we have many) are right at the head of shooting our first feature film. Ugh! I know, I know - everyone is doing that. The gear is so cheap and accessible. The reason why we’re shooting a $500 feature, Women of Various Ages before we get moving on BTS is because . . . we can. I feel the need to direct a tiny, $500 film with a 3 person crew on one of the new $6K digi cameras while it’s possible. We don’t have to worry about investors, distributors or powerful name actors chucking tantys. And we can make this particular feature film by ourselves - right now. We can succeed and we can fail. If we succeed - we move onto the next. If we fail - nobody will know about it. Most Australian films don’t make their money back. They don’t connect, as one industry friend was telling me today, with their audience. Phil and I believe we know why. We’re trying to figure out a way of making the kind of films we want to make - without compromise and with all the philosophical undertones and lynch-pinning that keeps an audience watching and connecting - and we think we might just be able to make a living at the same time. We think we’ve cracked it. Or at least - we have an idea how we can go about doing it. Slow but steady wins the race.
